“At Pulcra Chemicals, we tackle these dynamics with our strong global presence, tailoring our solutions to regional needs while consistently maintaining global sustainability criteria.”
As Magazine Leather publishing, our interview about “LEATHER INDUSTRY and SUSTAINABILITY” with Mr. Simon Neifer, Sales and Application Manager of the Leather division of PULCRA CHEMICALS, Germany-based Chemical Company:
Can we get to know you and the Pulcra Chemicals family?
I’m Simon Neifer, Head of Sales and Application Leather at Pulcra Chemicals. With over 140 years of experience, Pulcra Chemicals is a global leader in specialty chemicals, deeply committed to innovation and sustainability. Our focus in the leather industry goes beyond providing high-quality chemical solutions; we work closely with our partners to drive advancements in eco-friendly processes and responsible production.
Could you tell us about your services at Pulcra Chemicals, especially for the leather industry?
At Pulcra Chemicals, our services are tailored to the specific needs of the leather industry, combining deep chemical expertise with a commitment to sustainability and innovation. We offer a comprehensive range of solutions, from eco-friendly tanning agents to advanced finishing products that enhance both the performance and aesthetic quality of leather, all while minimizing environmental impact. Our goal is to support our partners in producing high-quality leather that meets the increasing demand for sustainable, responsible practices. We work closely with our customers, ensuring that our solutions not only meet today’s challenges but also help shape the future of the leather industry.
With the “Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)” coming into force in the EU, do you have any studies or initiatives at Pulcra Chemicals in this regard?
Absolutely! The ESPR is a landmark regulation that aligns with our long-standing dedication to sustainable practices. At Pulcra Chemicals, we’re working diligently to reduce the environmental footprint of our processes and products. For instance, our Pulcra Naturalis line boasts a high percentage of bio-based materials. We’re constantly innovating to ensure our products contribute to a circular economy, aligning with ESPR goals by designing solutions that improve efficiency and sustainability in leather production.
Leather has a historical background and significant stages today. What innovations has Pulcra Chemicals brought to leather processing?
The tradition of leather processing is rich and intricate, but our focus is on how to take these traditional methods into the future. At Pulcra Chemicals, we’ve introduced innovative tanning systems, like our zeolite-based solutions, which reduce water and chemical consumption. These innovations aim to respect the heritage of leather-making while embracing the needs of a more sustainable future. It’s about merging the old with the new—an approach we are very passionate about.
Could you share insights into regional or global markets in the supply chain?
The leather industry is a unique blend of local traditions and global market forces, making its supply chain complex and interconnected. Regional differences, particularly in sustainability standards, play a significant role. At Pulcra Chemicals, we navigate these dynamics by maintaining a strong global presence, allowing us to tailor our solutions to regional needs while consistently upholding global sustainability benchmarks. Whether operating in Europe, Asia, or the Americas, our products are designed to seamlessly integrate with local practices, while still aligning with the overarching goal of advancing sustainable and responsible leather production worldwide.
Do you have activities in various parts of the world, and do you participate in international fairs?
Absolutely, international fairs are a key part of our global engagement strategy. Pulcra Chemicals actively participates in major events like Lineapelle in Italy, APLF in Hong Kong, and other prominent industry fairs around the world. These platforms allow us to present our latest innovations, connect directly with industry leaders, and exchange insights on emerging trends. Being part of these global events is essential for staying ahead of the curve and continuously evolving our solutions to meet the changing demands of the leather industry. It also strengthens our relationships with partners across various regions, reinforcing our commitment to a global, sustainable future.
What are your thoughts on Artificial Intelligence and technology within the leather industry?
AI is revolutionizing the leather industry, much like every other sector. At Pulcra Chemicals, we’re exploring how AI can optimize the use of chemicals in leather processing, ensuring minimal waste and maximum efficiency. From predictive analytics for quality control to developing custom formulations based on data-driven insights, technology is enabling us to improve our processes while also supporting our sustainability goals.
What would you say to the leather industry about vegan petrochemical products and alternatives?
Leather is a byproduct of the meat industry that would otherwise be discarded. The tanning industry transforms this waste material into a valuable product with excellent properties and an exceptionally long lifespan. Leather articles can be repaired and reused, which makes them especially appealing from a sustainability standpoint and a good example of responsible resource use. Many alternative materials, often labeled as vegan, contain a significant amount of fossil-derived carbon, which presents clear disadvantages in terms of carbon footprint. In the future, we believe that the use of renewable carbon for producing materials, including fashion articles or also chemicals, will be a key focus of industrial activities.
Do you have cooperation and activities with universities for international sector employees?
Yes, collaboration with universities is a key aspect of our approach. We partner with academic institutions across Europe and globally to ensure that the next generation of chemists and leather technologists are well-prepared to address the future challenges of the industry. These partnerships support our research and development efforts while also fostering talent that understands the balance between cutting-edge chemistry and the sustainability requirements of modern leather production. By working closely with universities, we help shape the future workforce and advance innovation within the leather sector.
Finally, what would you like to say to people who are dedicated to the leather industry?
To those dedicated to the leather industry, I would say: innovation is crucial, but it’s the respect for tradition that makes leather truly special. The challenge we face is finding harmony between the craftsmanship and rich history of leather-making and the growing need for sustainability in today’s world. At Pulcra Chemicals, we are committed to this balance—pushing the boundaries of what’s possible through sustainable innovation while honoring the heritage that defines this industry. Together, we can shape a future that respects both the past and the evolving demands of our time.
