Individual traceability of livestock has been in place since birth, meeting international ESG standards, pioneering zero-deforestation in the cattle industry
Curitiba, January 2024 – A significant step towards a sustainable leather market was taken this week with the arrival of the first container of 100% traceable Brazilian leather for the European market. Durlicouros (Durli Leathers) was responsible for the sale and delivery of the product, which complies with the latest market requirements, pioneering zero-deforestation in the Amazon region at this initial stage.
The first container, containing approximately 1,000 wet blue leather hides, arrived in Italy earlier this week, delivered to Pasubio Spa, in the northern region of the country. The system allows tracking of all information about the animal that produced the leather via a QR code, following a rigorous traceability and sustainability policy in production.
The initiative to trace all phases of leather production was undertaken by the private sector, a partnership involving 40 farms in Pará. Currently, over 113,000 animals are being individually traced and managed through a blockchain system.
These processes were based on pioneering initiatives developed by the private sector, known as COTI/PRIMI (Individual Traceability and Indirect Monitoring Program). Organizers expect the program to reach the milestone of 200,000 traced cattle by the first quarter of 2024.
